5/22/2023 0 Comments Robert a heinlein red planet![]() Heinlein is especially imaginative here, with the unique Martian civilization and the realistic (at least for the time) details about humans trying to survive in the hostile environment of Mars. It’s up to these two boys to save their hometown and their Martian friend from the nefarious forces of evil. In between getting into trouble with the new, insanely strict headmaster, they find out about a plot that could endanger both humans and the native Martians. Two teenage boys, part of the human colonies on Mars, are sent away to boarding school in the biggest city on Mars. Though this is one of his early juvie novels, so it's safer than, say, Time Enough for Love. I really need to read it again as an adult, but Heinlein. ![]() ![]() This was, hands down, my favorite Heinlein book as a teen. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This paper considers the physical evidence for interpersonal violence and sacrificial death at Playa Venado based on the burial positioning, demographic composition, and trauma present on the human remains recovered from the site. ![]() At the precolumbian site of Playa Venado in Panama, these accounts of violent mortuary rituals may have influenced the interpretation of the burials encountered in excavations, leading to claims of mutilations and sacrifice, with little or no supporting evidence. Many Spanish chroniclers detail violent cultural practices of the indigenous populations they encountered in the Isthmo-Colombian Area however, lack of physical evidence of interpersonal violence from archaeological contexts has made uncertain the veracity of these claims. ![]() 5/22/2023 0 Comments Achieve by Jade Waltz![]() ![]() Gladstone’s Library, 10 April 2018: The Historical Novel: A Very Slippery Genre ![]() There’s a really good discussion at the end of the talk too.īelow is a copy of the outline and links I circulated at the talk. The second part is a very brief history of the development of the historical novel in the 19th century and its impact on the novel form more generally. The first part is a kind of Bibliomemoire where I talk about the role of historical narrative and detail in my childhood reading, including Jean Plaidy and Winston Graham’s Poldark series. And what a relief to discover that the first voice on the podcast was not my own, but the wonderful Louisa Yates, Director of Collections and Research, who introduced me.
